About Cary M. Maguire, Sr.

The American College of Financial Services commemorates the life of Cary M. Maguire, Sr., who passed away on August 10, 2021, at the age of 93.
“Cary was a lifelong champion of business ethics. His generosity to The American College and its Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services will help ensure that ethics always remains at the heart of the College’s endeavors,” said James A. Mitchell, CLU®, ChFC®, Chairman of the Board of The American College Cary Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services and retired Chairman, President and CEO, IDS Life.
A highly accomplished and trailblazing business leader, Maguire was the recipient of many accolades, including the American College’s Solomon Huebner Award, its highest honor, in 2016.
In 2012, Maguire generously endowed the American College Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services. Subsequently, he made the lead gift toward the College’s new building, which is named the Cary M. Maguire Building.
Maguire was the Chair and President of Maguire Oil Company and Maguire Energy Company and Chair of Components Corporation of America and Staco Inc. of California. His national leadership positions included serving on The National Petroleum Council, the Executive Committee of Mid-Continental Oil and Gas Association, and as a member of the Madison Council of the Library of Congress, where he funded the Maguire Chair in Ethics and American History.
In addition to his generosity to The American College, his philanthropic efforts also included a grant for the creation of the Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility and the endowment of a university-wide professorship in ethics at SMU.
The American College will forever remember Cary M. Maguire, Sr. for his generous support and dedication to ethics education.
