Good News: 2012 Huebner Medal Recipients

On December 7th at The American College’s President’s Dinner held in Chicago, IL, Peter C. Browne, LUTCF and Alan Press, CLU®, LUTCF, were both awarded the distinguished Huebner Gold Medal. The Huebner Medal, named for The College’s founder, Solomon S. Huebner, is

awarded annually to people who have moved the mission and programs of The College forward through their support and dedication. Past recipients have included Albert J. Schiff, CLU®, CAP® in 2011 and Robert B. Plybon, CLU®, ChFC® in 2010. For a complete list of past recipients, please see The College’s website at:

Alan has spent his career with The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in a variety of positions and was the CEO of the Wealth Advisory Group, LLC, in New York City, where he serves as a Senior Vice President. From 1992 to 2001, he served on The American College Board of Trustees; he also served as President of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) from 1988 to 1989. Alan has been bestowed with one of the industry’s most prestigious honors - the John Newton Russell Memorial Award - by the National Association of Life Underwriters and has been inducted into the GAMA International Management Hall of Fame. In conjunction with his professional pursuits, Alan has been featured as a main speaker at numerous industry events and published many financial magazine and journal articles. He has also provided testimony to the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and the New York State Commission on Insurance, Banking and Financial Services.

Upon receiving the news that Alan would be receiving the Medal, Jim Mitchell, Chairman of the Advisory Board of The Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services, said, “I am delighted that Alan Press has won the Huebner Gold Medal. Alan has always held our industry to the highest standards of ethical conduct, and has never hesitated to speak out when he saw us falling short. This recognition of his efforts is richly deserved.”

A co-founder of Price Raffel and Browne of New York, Peter has had a career spanning fifty years serving as a manager and producer for The Union Central Life Insurance Company and the Ameritas, as well as a leader in vital industry organizations. Currently, he serves as Chairman of The American College’s Foundation Board; he also served on the Board of Trustees and was instrumental in creating and funding the Larry R. Pike Chair in Insurance and Investments, which is sponsored by Union Central. In addition, Peter is a member of LIFE’s Board of Directors and has served in various roles for NYSAIFA, NAIFA, LUTC, GAMA and the Agents Advisory Board of Standard and Poor’s. For twenty-seven consecutive years, he has held Top of the Table distinctions with the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT); he is also a Lifetime Member of the association. In 2010, Peter received The President’s Award from The American College, which honors his long-term generosity and volunteer service to The College’s advancement efforts.

Regarding Peter’s contributions to The College, Tip Cronin, Senior Vice President of Advancement, remarked, “Peter embodies all of the best qualities of our graduates. He is a shining example of how one individual, dedicated to making a difference, can make a tremendous impact on the financial services industry and the professional educational programs that lead to personal success. We are proud to call him one of our alumni.”
